Red-tailed Hawk
Red-tailed Hawk
Red-tailed Hawks usually come by during the summer. These buteos hunt small mammals like rabbits, rats, chipmunks and squirrels. Fortunately, the small songbirds that come to the feeders are agile enough to avoid peril.
Besides their distinctive red tails, these hawks have another dintinctive field mark - a bellyband of dark feathers running across their underparts. This dark band of feathers is also a form of camouflage to help break up the bird's outline.
