Fortunately for the small animals and songbirds, Sharp-shinned Hawks are not around on a daily basis. However, during the month of February and October, they are here almost every day and it seems as though they are here all day long.

These hawks chase the songbirds through bushes and are very successful in catching them. It's very hard to let this happen, but we have to look at them as another bird coming to the feeder. They do catch some of the diseased and sick birds.

Beginning birders often mistake the Sharp-shinned Hawk with the Cooper's Hawk. Sharp-shinned hawks are smaller and have a small beak. See them side-by-side on Who's Who in the Birds 101 section.
