Western Scrub Jay
Western Scrub-Jays are rare in our area. When one does show up, the local Steller's Jays are very anxious around this visiting jay.
We observed a Western Scrub-Jay watch a chipmunk dig a hole and bury his cache of sunflower seeds. After the chipmunk left, the Scrub-Jay uncovered the buried seeds and ate them.
Scrub-jays eat parasites off of mule deer. While they are looking for parasites, the deer often stand still and hold their ears up to ensure a good cleaning.
