In July, 2005, a Rufous Hummingbird pierced a bee with its beak. It was frantically trying to get the bee off its beak by rubbing the beak sideways on the feeder and trying to use its feet to kick off the bee.

After a while, the hummer was exhausted. Later that morning, we tried to unsuccessfully net the hummer. However, we decided to stop trying to catch it as we were causing it even more stress.

After three days of seeing the hummer with the bee, we never saw it again. We hope it was able to get the bee off its beak and has blended into the crowd of hummers at our feeders.
